About
Power Outages Australia brings outage information from Australian electricity distributors into one place, so people can find out whether their power is out without first working out who supplies it — on the web, by chat, or by phone.
Why this exists
Australia's electricity distribution is split between around 17 networks. Which one serves you depends on your address, not your energy retailer — so most people have no idea who to contact until the power is already off, which is the worst possible moment to find out.
Every distributor publishes outage information. None of them publishes anybody else's. There was no national view.
Where the data comes from
We aggregate information distributors already make publicly available. We normalise it into one consistent format, attribute every outage to the network that reported it, and link back to their own page as the authoritative source.
- We show when data was last updated, always.
- We count only outages that have actually started — scheduled work is reported separately, never folded into live figures.
- We never present stale data as live, and we say when a feed is unavailable rather than quietly showing nothing.
Where we're up to — honestly
This site is currently a working demonstration. The outages shown on the map are simulated, not real — they exist to show how the service works while we establish data-sharing arrangements with distributors. Any page showing outage data carries a clear demonstration notice.
The national outage number, the chat assistant and the AI voice service described elsewhere on this site are in development and not yet operating. The multi-cloud and multi-carrier redundancy we describe is planned architecture, not yet in production.
For real outage information right now, contact your electricity distributor directly. In an emergency, call 000.
Free for customers, always
Members of the public are never charged to check an outage, ask the chat assistant, or call the number. There's nothing to sign up for and no account to create.
The service is funded by subscriptions from electricity distributors, who supply their outage data and can route their outage calls to us. That arrangement sits entirely between us and the distributor — it never reaches the customer.
Independence
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any electricity distributor, retailer or government body. Distributors remain the authority on their own networks, and we'll correct or remove anything about a network at that network's request.
Safety
Never rely on this site in an emergency. Treat every fallen powerline as live and stay well clear. If you depend on life support equipment, register with your distributor and contact them directly during an outage.
